Elbows and knees go rough and ashy before anywhere else, and lotion never seems to fix them. There is a structural reason: there are almost no oil glands there, and the skin is thicker and folds constantly.
Why these two spots specifically
- Very few oil glands. Most of your skin keeps itself supple with its own sebum. Elbows and knees get very little, so they run dry by default.
- Thicker skin. Built to take being leaned on and kneeled on, which means a light product does not penetrate it.
- Constant folding. Skin that bends thousands of times a day cracks at the fold if it has no flex left.
- Friction. Desks, floors, sleeves, and jeans.
That combination is why a thin, water-heavy lotion disappears without effect. It never had enough fat in it to matter on skin this thick.
What works
- Exfoliate lightly first, once or twice a week. A washcloth or a gentle scrub in the shower. There is a layer of dead, dry cells there and putting balm on top of it mostly conditions the dead layer.
- Apply on damp skin, straight out of the shower. There is water in the skin at that moment and the balm helps hold it there.
- Use more than you would elsewhere. Thick skin can take it, and unlike a face there is no congestion concern to speak of.
- At night, and heavily. Eight hours undisturbed. This is the one that does the work.
- Two weeks before you judge it. You are rebuilding skin that has been dry for months.
Why a fat and wax balm rather than lotion
Tallow is composed largely of the same fatty acids your skin produces, so it absorbs into thick skin rather than sitting on the surface, which is the whole problem on elbows. Beeswax slows the loss back out, which matters on a spot that has no oil glands of its own to top itself up.
Rough, ashy, or grey?
Dryness on darker skin often shows up as a grey or ashy cast rather than as visible flaking, and the same approach applies. Exfoliate lightly, apply to damp skin, be generous, and give it a fortnight.
When to get it looked at
Thick, well-defined, scaly plaques with a distinct border, or anything itchy and spreading, are not simple dryness and are worth a proper opinion. I make balm and I am not going to guess at skin conditions.
