You want the callus. You do not want it tearing off at the base of your fingers halfway through a set of deadlifts. The difference between useful callus and a torn hand is almost entirely how dry it is.
Why calluses tear
A callus is thickened skin doing its job. The problem is that thick skin with no moisture in it has no give, and a bar rolling across a raised, dry, rigid ridge peels it instead of sliding over it. That is why tears happen on the high, hard lumps rather than on flat, conditioned callus.
Chalk makes it worse in one specific way: it is there to remove moisture, and it does not stop when the bar leaves your hand.
Managing callus rather than removing it
- Keep it flat, not gone. A pumice stone or a callus file, gently, once or twice a week after a shower, only knocking the raised peaks down. Do not sand back to soft skin, or your hands will be worse than before.
- Then condition it. Filed callus with no moisture in it just builds back into the same ridge.
- Balm at night, every night. Not before training, for obvious reasons.
- Wash the chalk off when you are done rather than letting it sit for the drive home.
- Hook grip or straps for the highest-volume pulling if tearing is a recurring problem.
Never right before you lift
Worth stating plainly: do not put balm on your hands before training. You want grip, and any fat on your palms works directly against it. This is a nighttime and rest-day product.
Why tallow
It is close in composition to the fat your own skin makes, so it absorbs into thick skin instead of sitting on top of it, which matters on callus specifically because callus is dense and hard for a light lotion to get into at all. Beeswax slows the loss back out overnight.
If one does tear
Keep it clean, trim any loose flap rather than pulling it, cover it while it closes, and stay off the bar or use straps until it does. Use the balm on the skin around it and on the rest of the hand so you are not producing the next one. A tear that is hot, spreading, or not closing needs a doctor.
Unscented, if you would rather
