It can leave a grease mark if you use far too much, in the same way any oil does, and it comes out with ordinary washing. Used at the right amount it absorbs in a few minutes and there is nothing left on the surface to transfer.
Why a mark happens at all
An oil mark on fabric is not really a stain, it is oil sitting in the weave. It looks dark because it changes how the fabric reflects light, not because it has dyed anything. That is why it lifts out with detergent, which is built to shift exactly that, and why it sets if you tumble dry it first: heat drives the oil into the fibre.
The scented versions carry a fragrance oil, so in theory there is slightly more to transfer, but the amounts are tiny. Raw has none at all.
Getting a mark out
- Do not put it in the dryer first. This is the only step that really matters. Heat sets an oil mark.
- Work a drop of dish soap into the spot with a fingertip and leave it ten minutes. Dish soap is designed for grease.
- Wash warm, as warm as the fabric allows.
- Check before drying. If a shadow remains, repeat rather than drying.
On something you cannot wash, cornstarch or baking soda left on the mark for an hour will draw a surprising amount of oil out before you brush it off.
Pillowcases, and the balm-before-bed question
Overnight is the best time to use it, particularly on hands, so this comes up a lot. Two things solve it. Use less, warmed properly so it absorbs rather than sitting on the skin. And give it ten minutes before your head hits the pillow, which is usually the whole fix.
If you are using it heavily on cracked hands overnight, cotton gloves keep it on your hands and off the sheets, and they make the balm work better anyway by keeping it in contact.
Collars and hats
A beard balm applied and then immediately buttoned into a stiff collar is the other common one. Same answer: less product, warmed until clear, worked in properly, and a couple of minutes before you dress. If your beard still marks a collar an hour later, that is a dosage signal. How much to use.
The rule of thumb
Ten minutes after applying, your skin should feel soft and not look shiny. If it still looks shiny, there is surplus sitting on the surface, and surplus is what transfers. That is the same test for greasiness, marking, and wasting the tin.
