Cuticles are the first thing to shred when your hands work for a living and the last thing anyone takes care of. Torn cuticles catch on everything, and dry nail beds crack and peel. Thirty seconds a day fixes most of it.
Why cuticles split
The cuticle is a thin seal of skin protecting the root of your nail. Water exposure, dirt, cold air, and hand sanitizer dry it until it lifts and tears. Once torn, it snags and tears further (usually at the worst possible moment).
The thirty-second routine
- A small dab of balm rubbed into each nail bed at night, that's the whole program
- Push cuticles back gently after a shower if they need it; never cut dry, torn edges
- Working outside or washing hands all day? Add a morning pass.
Why tallow instead of cuticle oil
Cuticle oils work but migrate off within the hour. A beeswax-set balm stays on the nail bed, and the same fats that seal cracked knuckles feed the cuticle. One tin, one habit, and it covers your hands, heels, face, and beard too.
