Petroleum jelly is very good at one thing: sealing. It puts a barrier over skin and almost nothing gets through it, in either direction. Tallow does something different. It absorbs. Which one you want depends on whether you are trying to protect skin or feed it.
How each one works
Petroleum jelly is an occlusive and effectively nothing else. It sits on the surface and blocks water from leaving. It does not absorb, it does not add anything to the skin, and it is not meant to. That is why it is so effective on a wind-burned face or a cracked knuckle you need to protect for a few hours.
Tallow is made of largely the same fatty acids as your own sebum, so it soaks in and becomes part of the skin's own barrier rather than a layer on top of it. It also brings something with it, where petroleum jelly brings nothing.

When petroleum jelly is the better choice
- Overnight on a badly cracked heel or knuckle, ideally under a sock or glove
- A short-term barrier against wind or cold on exposed skin
- You need something cheap in volume and feel is irrelevant
When tallow is the better choice
- Skin under a beard. Petroleum jelly coats hair and does not get to the roots.
- Daily use on hands and face, where a permanent greasy film is not acceptable
- You want the skin itself to improve rather than just be covered
- You would rather not put a petroleum product on your face, which is a preference, not a claim
The honest summary
Petroleum jelly is a lid. It is a good lid, it is cheap, and it works. But a lid on an empty jar is still an empty jar. It stops your skin getting worse and it does not particularly help it get better.
Tallow gets absorbed and used. For daily dry skin, hands, and anywhere under facial hair, that is the more useful behavior. For sealing one cracked spot overnight, the lid wins. There is no rule against owning both.
