Balm for Razor Burn and Post-Shave Irritation

Razor burn is irritated, stripped skin. A shave removes hair and also takes off a layer of the surface along with whatever oil was on it, so the fix is putting fat back rather than splashing on something that stings.

Why alcohol aftershave makes it worse

The sting is not the product working. Alcohol-heavy aftershave is an astringent, and on skin you have just scraped it removes what little oil is left and dries out the surface you are trying to settle down. It has a place for its antiseptic value on nicks, but as daily aftercare on irritated skin it works against you.

What actually helps after a shave

  1. Cool rinse to close things down and take the soap off.
  2. Pat, do not rub. A towel dragged across freshly shaved skin is more abrasion on top of the abrasion you just did.
  3. Balm on slightly damp skin. A small amount, warmed between your fingers first, pressed and smoothed rather than rubbed in hard.
  4. Leave it alone after that. No toner, no alcohol, nothing else.

Why tallow suits post-shave skin

It is built from largely the same fatty acids your own skin produces, so it absorbs into a surface that has just lost its own oil rather than sitting on top as a film. The beeswax slows the moisture loss that follows a shave. And with the unscented version there is no fragrance going onto skin that is already irritated, which is worth something: fragrance is the most common cause of reaction to any skincare product. Raw is that one.

Preventing it, which beats treating it

  • Shave after a shower, not before. Warm, hydrated hair cuts far more easily.
  • With the grain first. Against the grain gets you closer and causes most of the irritation and most of the ingrowns.
  • A sharp blade. Most razor burn is a dull blade dragging. Change it sooner than you do.
  • Less pressure, more passes. Let the blade do it.
  • Real lather, not soap. Give it thirty seconds to soften the hair.
  • Shave less often while your skin recovers.

When it is not razor burn

Pustules, painful bumps that persist, spreading redness, or recurring ingrown hairs with inflammation are their own thing and worth having looked at, particularly if you get them consistently. A balm is for irritated dry skin, not for that.
