Beard itch has a simple cause most of the time: the skin UNDER the beard is dry, because your face oil can't keep up with the hair it's suddenly feeding. The beard steals the moisture; the skin underneath pays for it.
Why the itch happens
Every hair on your face wicks oil away from the skin at its root. A week of growth is a hundred thousand tiny wicks. Add hot showers and winter air, and the skin under your beard ends up drier than anywhere else on your body, and it lets you know by itching like a wool sweater.
Balm beats oil for itch
Beard oil conditions hair well, but for itch the target is the SKIN, and oil mostly rides the hair. A balm gets worked in at the roots, carries tallow and shea down to the skin, and the beeswax keeps it there through the day (with light hold for the beard as a bonus).
How to use it
- Start with a fingertip of balm, warm it between your fingers until it melts
- Work it against the grain, down to the skin, then style with the grain
- Best right after a shower while pores are warm and skin is clean
- Daily for the first week or two of a new beard (that's peak itch season)
