Winter is hard on a beard for a reason that has nothing to do with the cold itself. Cold air holds almost no moisture, indoor heat holds even less, and you spend the day moving between the two. The skin under your beard loses either way.
What winter actually does
- Cold outdoor air is dry air. At 20 degrees there is very little water in it, so it pulls moisture out of exposed skin continuously.
- Forced-air heat is drier still. Heating cold air without adding water drops the indoor humidity through the floor.
- Hotter, longer showers. Understandable in January, and the single most stripping thing you do to your face.
- Wind. Mechanically removes the thin layer of moisture sitting at the surface. See windburn.
Together that is why a beard that behaved fine in September starts flaking in December.
What to change
- Twice a day instead of once. Morning before you go out, night before bed. Frequency matters more than quantity.
- Warm the balm longer. Cold balm is stiffer. Take the same amount and spend five or ten more seconds between your palms rather than scooping more. See how much to use.
- Turn the shower down and keep it short. The least popular advice and the most effective.
- Wash the beard less. Twice a week in winter is plenty.
- Balm before you go out, not after you get back. It works better as a barrier than as a repair.
- Cover it when it is really cold. A beard is not a scarf.
Why a wax-containing balm suits winter
Two things have to happen: the skin needs fat it can absorb, and it needs something slowing the loss on the way back out. Tallow handles the first, because it is close in composition to what your skin makes. Beeswax handles the second by staying nearer the surface. A thin oil does the first job and very little of the second, which is why oil alone often is not enough in January.
A note on the tin in a cold truck
Balm left in a vehicle overnight in winter will be rock solid in the morning. Nothing is wrong with it. Hold it in a closed hand for a minute, or keep it inside.
