A family farm in northern Indiana. Pasture raised, grain finished, which means it is not grass fed and I do not call it that. Here is the whole chain, because "traceable" is a word people use loosely and it should mean something.
The actual sourcing
The beef tallow comes from a family farm here in northern Indiana. Their cattle are pasture raised and grain finished. Those are two different claims and the difference matters: pasture raised describes how the animals live, grain finished describes what they eat toward the end. Grass fed means grass for the whole life, and that is not what this is.
I keep the farm and the beekeeper unnamed here because neither signed up to be a public reference, and because where I buy is not really the reader's business. If you ask me directly I will tell you.
I could sell more balm by using the phrase anyway. Plenty do. It is on the label of things it does not describe, and once you notice that you start noticing it everywhere.
The beeswax is filtered wax from a beekeeper in New Paris, Indiana, about fifteen minutes from where the balm gets made.
Why grass fed is the claim everyone reaches for
Because it signals a nutritional difference in the fat, and there is real evidence the fatty acid profile differs. Whether that survives rendering and matters on your skin is a much weaker claim than the marketing suggests, and I have not seen anything that would let me make it honestly.
So the reason to care about sourcing here is not a vitamin claim. It is that you can find out where it came from at all.
The premium tier, where the claim will be true
There is a bison version in the works using local grass-fed bison, and that is where a grass-fed claim will live, because it will be accurate. Until it exists I am not going to borrow the words.
